Breakerboy - Demos 1996

by Michael Knapp (with Grant Matthews on tracks 4 and 7)

In the year and change between Dig Miner Dig’s breakup and the formation of Sunday Driver, I wrote and recorded a bunch of songs that were borne out of my restlessness of not playing in a band at that time and my skepticism of moving back to Pittsburgh from school in Florida. Most of these demos were recorded in my parent’s attic (a.k.a. my childhood bedroom) with what I would call my “indoor voice.” (I was so self-conscious and serious!) These tracks are 100% rough edges and imperfections. I was getting ideas out as quickly as I could and only fixed or polished what I absolutely had to. All the guitars went straight into my Tascam 4-track via my Rat pedal, and my bass was purchased for $30 at Pittsburgh Guitars on East Carson Street. Quality first!

Two unique tracks here (GM Chicken Song and GM First Song) were my first collaborations with old high school skateboarding buddy Grant Matthews prior to the formation of our band Sunday Driver in 1996. These two tracks are weird as hell, and I really kinda love them. So many ideas, so little time. They make a lot of our Sunday Driver songs seem tame in comparison. FUN FACT: Chicken Song was named for the weird vocal hiccup at the end of the track.
